Why Victoria Beckham’s latest fashion show was a ‘flag in the sand’

Ahead of her second runway show at Paris Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham seems to be entering an exciting new era, nearly 15 years after the launch of her namesake label.

“I’ve been in fashion longer than I’ve been in music,” Beckham said introspectively by phone from London just days after the Fall/Winter 2023 show in the French capital.

Still known to many outside the fashion world as “Posh Spice,” the nickname for one-fifth of the Spice Girls, she is a mainstay of celebrity gossip sites and a famous husband. It has David Beckham and his increasingly famous children. She married actor Nicola Peltz last year in a high-profile wedding to Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.

Still, Beckham’s brand, which launched in 2008, has been warmly endorsed by the fashion industry’s upper echelons (Anna Wintour is a regular guest on her shows).

Never a fashion novice, she regularly showed at New York and London Fashion Weeks before debuting at Paris Fashion Week last September, and her label has long been known for its sexy, streamlined aesthetic. has been synonymous with POSH The essential silhouette of her Spice look is now arguably presented in a more grown-up and glamorous way.

The fact that her fashion line has been around for so long is worth noting. Beckham received critical acclaim during his tenure, but it’s rare for celebrities without formal design training to succeed. Fenty, which was formerly known as Fenty, closed after two years (although it should be noted that Rihanna’s eponymous beauty brand is thriving.

Despite her longevity, the commercial viability of Beckham’s business has often been questioned, but the business seems to be finally on the rise.According to Women’s Wear Daily, Beckham’s fashion and beauty Venture centerpiece Victoria Beckham Holdings Limited reported profitability for the first time in its 2022 fiscal year. In January, the brand’s CEO, Marie LeBlanc, told the Business of Fashion that sales had grown by double digits over the past four seasons.

Reflecting on these milestones, Beckham said, “I think we can really, really start building.

Beckham’s company recently underwent a complete restructuring, both business and creative. From improving her IT and digital planning systems along the back end to (slightly) lowering prices, “new design team, new atelier, new members in all departments, if you please,” she said.

Though she’s made many changes, Beckham’s commitment to quality control has remained unwavering for a long time.

Her work doesn’t look like a courtroom trend, and she doesn’t operate with flash or ephemerality (perhaps contrary to the expectations set by her Spice Girls persona). Her clothes mix fantasy with hard facts. For example, in her Fall/Winter 2023 look, she paired her layered chiffon and feather accent dress with her utilitarian khaki trench. And, importantly, there are actually no Victoria Beckham logos or marks except for her typeface.

This is not to say that her brand does not have signature pieces. Beckham’s ‘watch chain’ accessories, featuring bold, reflective accents reminiscent of watch wristbands, have become popular. Beckham was inspired by the detail on the strap of her “watch her husband bought her. Vintage Patek Her Philippe.”

Metalwork can be seen front and center in nano-sized to jumbo-sized handbags, along with a selection of shoes and jewellery. Career caught up. The newst collection extra large size is already sold out by reservation. And Beckham seems to have found fans through perhaps an unexpected market indicator: Her son Cruz wore a chain-accented crossbody “Eva” bag and custom Victoria Beckham monogrammed denim to her mother’s presentation. I was wearing

“On my way to the show, Cruz called me and said, ‘Mom, can I borrow your glasses? And I was like, ‘Yeah, of course you can borrow my glasses.'” , and I found this bag in your wardrobe,” Beckham said with a laugh.

Does this mean menswear is on the horizon? “It’s a dream. Not yet. But I’m always inspired by menswear. You see it in tailoring,” Beckham said said.

Menswear may not be coming soon, but she launched her own makeup and skincare brand, Victoria Beckham Beauty, in 2019. And most recently, she launched her VB Body. -Slimming dress. These pieces are part of the entire Victoria Beckham line, but are sold at lower prices.

“VB Body was actually an idea that came to me when I spent a lot of time in Miami,” said Beckham. She and her husband have a home in the city of Florida. David is a partner of the American football club Inter Milan. She said, “I think she dresses pretty liberally in the way women like to show off their bodies and celebrate who they are. She’s really into it.” I think I have the confidence of

Since moving his runway show to Paris last year, Beckham has noticed an increase in editorial and red carpet attention. For Fall/Winter 2023, Drew commissioned her Barrymore to create a teaser for her social media, paying homage to the lore of the documentary and film Gray Gardens (Barrymore starred in the latter). “Stories don’t always inspire me in the literal sense,” Beckham says.

That kind of energy feels fresh. A new wind is blowing in Beckham’s sails. She seems more optimistic herself and that is reflected in her own styling. “I always wore black,” she said. “And I don’t know exactly what changed or what happened, but I rarely wear black these days. I love wearing color and I love wearing unexpected colors together. (Unique colors and pairings are another hallmark of Beckham’s brand code.)

Other than Victoria Beckham’s aesthetic, what tenets helped her stay on course? “Years ago,” says Beckham. “You have to follow what you think is right.”

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. There are a lot of things I want to do with my brand, both in fashion and beauty. And like I said, now I really believe I can start building. It was to get the business back on track and we have a great design team and we have very well oiled machines.

“Everything I do is grounded in reality,” she concluded. “But it was never a compromise of a dream.”
