orlando, florida – Our pets may be the animals that affect us the most.
In fact, studies show that people who spend more time with dogs have a 300% increase in oxytocin levels, and experts say loving pets is part of our instincts as humans.
87.3% of Americans report being happier than the average person because they own a pet. Our pets may be more connected to us than we know.
“For example, dogs understand human communication much better than human primates do,” says UCSD Cognitive Scientist Dr. Federico Rossano.
A recent study of dogs showed that they pick up on chemical and psychological cues from their owners to extend their moods. If you’re stressed, your dog will be stressed too.
“When you cry, their heartbeat changes. Heartbeat changes. They can realize something is wrong,” said Rossano.
Cats can seem detached at times, but one study found that cats spend more time interacting with their owners than eating.
Stroking a cat has been proven to make you feel better by releasing oxytocin, also known as the love hormone.
Owning a pet can help extend your life. They contribute to longevity by influencing longevity, reducing stress, fighting cardiovascular disease, and connecting us to our support systems.
“You have creatures that care about you and pay attention to you, and they will notice,” said Rossano.
Pets may also keep us alive longer. A study of over 2,000 pet owners showed a significantly lower risk of death from stroke and heart attack compared to people without pets.
