When Ludwig Göransson attends the 95th Academy Awards, he is an Oscar winner (he black panther 2018) and the first nomination (first original song entry). He is nominated for ‘Lift Me Up’ alongside director Ryan Coogler, Nigerian artist Thames and global icon Rihanna. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
For In-Demand Composers — Their Work Has Provided Soundscapes mandalorian (seasons 1 and 2), Tenet, Creed I and ⅡDonald Glover’s guava island Our latest collaboration with Coogler is the culmination of a 15-year partnership. But the Swedes say their job black panther made him a better composer. “I am very fortunate to work with collaborators who choose to do art,” he says Göransson. “and Wakanda Forever, Ryan really wanted to push the boundaries and disciplines of music, sounds and songs and see how these three elements could be combined. There is a lot of thought and detail put into . ”
A few weeks before the Oscar ceremony on March 12, Goransson THR About convincing Rihanna to record a track, discovering Maya’s music, and compiling a massive wishlist of collaborators.
“Obviously, the movie was about motherhood, and the movie was full of very strong female characters. The name we started talking about was Rihanna,” says Disney/Marvel’s Goransson. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Long before Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance, you were already talking to your new mother. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. How did you persuade her?
Very early on, we started having conversations about music and talking about stories. How can we relate that to the artists, what is the sound we are going for, who are the artists that embody the story. And obviously, the movie is about motherhood, and the movie is full of very strong female characters. The name we started talking about was Rihanna. And I knew she hadn’t released music in six years. But I have a good relationship with Roc Nation and Rihanna’s manager, Jay Brown. I contacted him about it very early. He was honest and said the project would be interesting but she was very busy. [that] She got to see rough cuts of the film. She felt a strong connection to her story, and I think that, after a conversation with Ryan, that led her to this project.
When you’re composing a film that represents so many cultures and partnering with global artists, why is it important to record where the artists are from?
We are trying to get as close to the truth as possible. Together with Ryan, we are building the world. Some of these worlds are very closely related to history. Especially Tarokan and its world are related to the Maya. Wakanda is a fictional African country, uncolonized and one of the most intelligent and technological in the world. What’s the closest thing to this in real life? When working with music, I feel a lot of an artist’s musical identity comes from where they come from. That’s why I think it’s so important for artists to be where they feel most comfortable.
With so much Mayan music erased, there was the challenge of incorporating Mesoamerican music. How did you know where to start?
It has all been erased. I still have traces of it on my instrument. Traces of musical instruments can be seen in the tomb. On the Maya part, I was working with a music archaeologist. They were basically musicians, but they have degrees in archaeology. They have access to those graveyards. Ordinary archaeologists don’t see things like wands or ornaments, but musicologists can confirm that these ornaments actually have holes and fingerprints. I understand this. Working with these musical archaeologists and working with these instruments that were actually in use during the Mayan period allowed us to rethink what we thought sounded as close as possible to the real thing.
When you’re producing a movie soundtrack and incorporating contemporary artists, do you search Spotify or Apple Music playlists first? do you
that’s a great question. Before I went to Nigeria and before I went to Mexico, I had playlists of her 200, 300 songs on Spotify and Apple Music. Some artists are established in Mexico, others are not. Listen to their voices, look at the lyrics, read about them, read about what they have to say, where they’re from, their agenda, how these voices fit into Ryan’s story. This movie puzzle definitely makes you think about what fits.
Tems is one of the hottest artists in Nigeria right now. When did you start working together?
When Ryan began writing music for a film that was still in production, the Thames entry point was right. Ryan and I talked about how we could put the through line of the song into the score and make it all part of the same DNA. My first trip was to Mexico where I started working on the Tarokan sounds of Namor. Shortly after that, I traveled to Nigeria. Ryan had finished filming the movie, so we were able to actually go together.
I made a dream list of people I want to work with in Nigeria. Tems was at the top of that list. She wanted to do her version of “No Woman, No Cry,” so I had her sing it in the trailer. After she recorded it, she presented her with the idea for “Lift Me Up”. I knew it was a special idea. She had Ryan write the lyrics beforehand, but it was during the session with the Thames that she showed me the lyrics. We had this melody, but she took it elsewhere by writing this incredible poem.

Talking drums were very important to T’Challa. black pantherSo what were the central instruments and sounds? Wakanda Forever?
Call it the human voice. Talking Drums is a percussive instrument that comes as close as it sounds to the human voice. With Talking Drum, you can speak on it, you can say words, you can say syllables… It’s almost like a voice in itself. In this movie, having human voices (mainly female voices being the story of the music and the score, both the song and the score) was very… not a conscious decision to make. But when the movie ended, I was like, ‘Oh my god, the whole music has voices, almost 2 hours and 40 minutes of vocals and voices.
I can hear my mother’s voice when I’m in my belly. Most of the time, the first words a child hears are from their mother. And there’s something very intimate about it, especially when a lot of the story is about dealing with something very complicated and you can see the characters trying to express that, but a lot of the music are actually emotional… what’s going on in their heads.
talked with Wakanda Forever We asked production designer and Academy Award winner Hannah Beechler a few months ago about her epic 900-page Wakanda bible. Do you ever use it as a reference for the music you make?
What’s special about being part of Ryan’s family is that he keeps me involved. [Carter, costume designer], and we are all part of the family. He doesn’t try to separate us. He gets everyone involved in the process so we all feel like we’re working together, which is one of his secrets for why his films are so successful and special.
Who, besides you, would you root for among your fellow nominees to win the best original song?
It’s been a great year. There are a lot of good songs, and I’m happy just to be able to participate.
