NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) — Republican Gov. Bill Lee said he wore women’s clothing during high school to drag out a show performance that is currently under attack in Tennessee and other Republican-led states. It says it’s “silly” to mix up recent photos in the yearbook. .
Lee told reporters this week that he will tighten down on places where drag performances take place by banning “adult cabaret entertainment” that is “harmful to minors” from public property and places where children may see performances. He said he plans to sign a bill to limit it.
The bill does not explicitly include the term ‘drag show’ but expands the definition of adult cabaret to include ‘male or female impersonators’, topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers and strippers It looks like
On Monday, as Lee answered questions from reporters about the law and other anti-LGBTQ bills, an activist asked if he remembered “dressing up in drugs in 1977.”
Lee was presented with a photograph of a senior high school governor in women’s clothing from the 1977 Franklin High School yearbook. This photo was first posted on her Reddit over the weekend.
“What a silly question,” said a visibly angry Lee. “It’s a very serious problem to confuse such things with sexual entertainment in front of children.”
When asked for specific examples of inappropriate drag shows in front of children, Lee pointed to a school building near where he was talking to reporters.
“I think the concern is right there in the building,” Lee said. “We need to make sure that they are children who may be exposed to sexual entertainment and obscenity and that they are not.”
This is the second time Lee’s yearbook photo has sparked controversy. In 2018, Lee said she regretted wearing a Confederate uniform at an “Old South” party after confirming there was a photo of her in a Confederate uniform in Auburn University’s 1980 yearbook. bottom.
The Republican-dominated state legislature finished introducing legislation last week and headed to Lee’s desk. An anti-drag show bill is set to pass Congress this week.
Drugs usually do not involve nudity or stripping, which is more common in burlesque, another form of entertainment. These routines may consist of stand-up comedy.
