Save money in Oslo with these 5 travel hacks

Oslo, Norway. Vigeland Park is his one of the most popular parks.

    David Nickel

From modern Scandinavian architecture on the waterfront to an emerging arts scene, Oslo has a lot to offer the curious traveler in 2023. However, while Oslo has many great activities, travelers can easily run the hefty bill like Norway. He is one of the most expensive countries in the world.

Still, there are some simple things you can do or avoid to save money for other things while traveling. From choosing wise transportation to adopting a more flexible approach to food and drink. Here are some tips for saving money in the Norwegian capital.

    Ignore airport express trains

This first travel hack can save you over $10 per person before you even get to the city. Oslo Airport is only 20-25 minutes from downtown Oslo, but there is a big difference in prices between the two rail services.

airport express train Flytoget is a direct flight that operates every 10 or 20 minutes throughout the day. It is more convenient than local trains and sometimes runs more often, but it is more expensive than regular commuter trains.

It doesn’t make sense to pay 230 NOK ($22) for a one-way ticket when local trains only cost NOK 118 ($11.50). Half the service takes exactly the same amount of time, but the slowest one takes about 10 minutes longer.

Find timetables on vy.no and buy your ticket using the Vy app or from one of the ticket machines upon arrival.

    embrace the outdoors

Many of the usual attractions and museums included in the itinerary charge an admission fee. Oslo has some things worth paying for, including the sprawling new National Museum.

But thanks to Norwegians’ love of the outdoors, some of Oslo’s best attractions are completely free. All you need is a public transport ticket to visit these tranquil islands of historic sites and nature reserves, just minutes by passenger ferry from downtown Oslo.

Meet locals and get to know Norwegian culture.

    David Nickel

The same can be said for the hiking trails in the Nordmarka Forest and the world-famous Vigeland sculpture in the leafy Frogner Park. Save money with these free activities and experience the nature that Norway is famous for without leaving the capital.

stay in an apartment instead of a hotel

After years of new building projects and renovations, there is a wide range of luxury and budget hotels available for travelers visiting Oslo. However, even if you manage to find a cheap hotel room, consider the overall cost of your trip before booking.

Staying in an apartment is a great option, especially for couples and families. The reason is simple. Cooking your own meals saves a small amount of money, especially for large groups. Options range from serviced apartments in the heart of downtown to local rental properties via his AirBnB in leafy suburbs.

Saving money by restricting your diet doesn’t limit your Norwegian culinary experience. Supermarkets stock local favorites such as fresh salmon, brown cheese and lefse.

    avoid alcohol

If you’re used to having a bottle of wine with dinner or a few beers in the evening, consider whether that’s necessary for your travel plans. If not, you can save a lot. A regular pilsner costs $8 to $10 in bars and restaurants, but craft beer costs more.

If you choose to avoid alcohol, you are not alone. Norwegian breweries are increasingly producing non-alcoholic versions of their popular pilsners and IPAs, while intensely fruity flavor-packed mocktails are popular in bars and restaurants.

If you want to enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner and you are staying in an apartment, please use the duty-free shop at the airport upon arrival.Otherwise you’ll have to go to a national liquor store Vin Mono Polettewith short opening hours and far from budget prices.

    don’t buy bottled water

This final travel tip won’t save you a ton of money, but if you’re staying for a few days, it will add up quickly.

Staying hydrated is an important travel habit, but even a small bottle of mineral water can cost $2 at the supermarket and more at the convenience store. Tap water in Norway is perfectly drinkable, so bottled water is an unnecessary expense.

Purchasing or purchasing a reusable water bottle can save you money while traveling and also significantly reduce your plastic usage. Also be aware of the fountain in the airport terminal. Bottled water is even more expensive.
