It is becoming increasingly common to see hawks and even eagles in our area. will be Birds of prey can carry between one-third and one-half of their body weight. Some birds, such as bald eagles, can carry three-quarters of their body weight over short distances.

A red-tailed hawk weighs about 3 to 4 pounds and a great horned owl about 5 pounds, so the average prey weight is 1.5 to 2.5 pounds.

Because raptors attack and eat their prey without carrying it away, large dogs are still at risk of attack and can suffer fatal injuries. I saw this first hand in the dog. When the owner discovered the attack, it had one eye pierced and multiple puncture wounds on all four limbs and the rear end.

Keep this in mind if you have small pets and be careful if you live in a wooded area. As mentioned above, hawks are becoming more and more daring, and neighborhood attacks are becoming more common. Even if you see a falcon coming, it will be difficult to stop it. They are also protected by the federal government under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, so harming a hawk can cause problems, even if you are harming a pet. A month’s imprisonment or a fine of up to $15,000 may be imposed.

To protect your pet from raptors, you need to take precautions. If you are in an area known for hawks or owls, do not let your pet out unsupervised. Having a pet with you can be a great deterrent to hawk attacks. Hawks prefer to hunt during the day and owls prefer to hunt at night, so the time of day is not important to avoid an attack.

Please keep pets on a leash. Your pet will get closer to you and the birds will not be able to take your pet away. Do not walk in open fields where falcons may be hunting.

Don’t put bird feeders in your own yard that attract small birds and thus raptors. You can build a wire enclosure that allows you to exit.

Perhaps one of the best ideas for fending off hawk attacks is a coyote vest. You can find this at coyotesvest.com. The owner has been in business since 2015. After my pet Buffy was killed by a coyote, I set about creating a vest that would protect my pet without hindering its movement. They have a “Hawk Shield” that attaches to the Coyote’s vest and is made of three layers of Dupont Kevlar that create a puncture-resistant shield.

We’ve mainly focused on birds of prey, but bears are becoming a bigger problem in our area. Best way to prevent it. Both small and large dogs have the tendency to attack wild animals, so they run without thinking about the danger of a bear. It’s up to us to keep them out of that trouble.
