Opinion | Sinead O’Dwyer’s show at London Fashion Week shows that diversity in high fashion matters

As London Fashion Week drew to a close, one show got people talking. Sinead O’Dwyer.

The show was incredibly diverse, featuring models of all sizes and races. underestimation into luxury fashion. Some models even walked down the catwalk in wheelchairs. It’s the first time I’ve seen models over 14 sizes on display and I’ve seen a lot of shows.

British Vogue released clips from the show on their tick tock, received mixed reactions in the comments section.beauty news sites such as glamor uk .

While some viewers were excited to see more diversity on the runways, others felt the show lacked quality. People commented that the models didn’t look like “typical” models and criticized the way they walked. One TikTok user commented, “They all look really great, but the model’s gait is sorely lacking.” A lot of the comments brought to mind the “reviving the ’90s model” argument, but that’s exactly the point. They’re not supermodels, they’re normal people with normal bodies like you and me. And that’s what O’Dwyer’s show was all about.

This idea that models must look and act in a certain way demonstrates the exclusivity of high fashion. It is not a place where models can exist. Seeing people on the catwalk who look different than the traditional image of a model suggests that rather than embracing the inclusive and diverse representation they bring to global fashion, we should consider “others.” people are often regarded as

odwyer She said she wanted to create more luxury fashion accessiblebecause she believes every body should be celebrated and loved. historically To break out of this mold, she used exclusively thin body shapes to style and shape her clothes. High fashion excludes many people from modeling.

O’Dwyer believes that each piece she creates Man I’m wearing it If it doesn’t stray from standard measurements, it’s more effort and work.O’Dwyer thinks about including big models from the start instead of trying to cram them into small outfits.from plus size Savage x Fenty Underwear and lingerie brand Rihanna is also specifically designed to support larger breasts and bodies.

Few designers have tried to include more, but diverse Models, some are striving. For example, Di Petsa’s model Autumn 2023 The ready-to-wear collection featured not only people of color, but also many plus-size and pregnant models. Valentino also included models of different races and body types. Autumn 2022 Couture shows prove that beauty can come at any size.

O’Dwyer’s show shows how diversity in high fashion should be executed. Designers make clothes to fit models, rather than fitting clothes to models, and use models with real people’s bodies rather than sample sizes. If is at the center of everything, it’s clear that people with different body types won’t look good wearing it. .

Inclusiveness and sizing versatility are still new in luxury and high fashion. “plus size” Only recently has the fashion industry expanded to include women in sizes 12-14. on the other hand, women’s average size 16 to 18 years old in the United States.

Hopefully, as more designers and brands decide to move away from the one-size-fits-all shell, we’ll see high fashion on every body.
