Throughout March, the National Life Group is soliciting submissions from Vermont high school bands for the Beats for Good competition.
Open to all current high school students, this contest welcomes all musical activities regardless of genre or scale. The winner will receive her $5,000 donation to the school’s music program and the opening slot of the 2023 Do Good Fest. The festival is scheduled for July 15th at National Life’s Montpelier campus. The 2022 edition attracted more than 6,000 attendees to raise money for the Chapter Hope Cancer Fund at Central Vermont Medical Center.
Submissions from high school bands must include a link to a performance no longer than 5 minutes. A local panel of music experts and educators judges the contestants and selects the winner to kick off the festival. For more information and to submit your music, please visit dogoodfest.com/beatsforgood.
folk duo Byrds & Carol New single “Man in a Balloon” released.Written by a multi-instrumentalist Brian Carrollthe song is a tribute to Brian Bollandis a famous Vermont hot air balloonist who died in 2021 after falling out of a balloon.
“My wife and I were lucky enough to ride in a hot air balloon together. [Boland] “Just a few months before he died,” Carroll explained in an email. “I only met him once. Brian was one of them.”
with fellow multi-instrumentalists Mark Bards On acoustic guitar, Carroll recorded a lovely, albeit somewhat melancholy, folk tune to honor a man who had, as Carroll put it, “a palpable lust for life.”
“Man in a Balloon” will start streaming on March 15th (Wednesday).
Raf Francis drummer Urian Hackney I’m playing the drums on “Late Night With” this week Seth MeyersHackney, who also plays in Detroit art rock groups, armamentare sitting together 8G band Subcontracting Saturday Night Live Alums and 8G Bandleaders Through Thursday March 9th Fred Armisen. The gig came through Hackney’s sponsorship with Ludwig Drums.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs at 12:35 a.m. on NBC. If you can’t stay up with your coffee, be sure to stream Hackney’s appearance the next day.
Hackney might forget that he’s supposed to play lead-in music for the host, and just destroy the kit with a giant breakbeat until Myers has to restrain him. , it’s my fantasy.

Dusk Quartet at 126 in Burlington, Friday March 3rd: The best news isn’t always that something new is happening, but it may be that old things are happening again. I say “old”, but in venue years, the 126 is still a baby. In contrast, 126 is an old soul when it comes to contributing and creating opportunities. The venue has been closed since New Year’s Eve while its recent owner-to-manager sale was finalized, leaving the local jazz community feeling the loss of more than two months of gigs deeply. I was. And the Dusk Quartet, which has been doing bimonthly residencies for years, hit the stage last Friday for a (secret) ribbon-cutting. I feel safe and secure.
