The couple left home for school and work, but they missed their hometown. By 2016, they saw Bonavista’s population stop declining and new businesses opening up thanks to tourism. They decided they wanted to raise their children where they grew up.
In 2017, they launched Bonavista Adventure Tours. This tour company offers hands-on activities such as berry foraging and traditional Newfoundland beach ‘boiling’ picnics and bonfires. Jordan said everything they do must provide a sense of place.
Two years later they opened a cafe. With the goal of creating a restaurant that feels like a cozy home, they found a local potter to cook the food, source food and drink locally, and hired neighborhood musicians to give the restaurant a kitchen party atmosphere. gave.
“Sometimes I pinch myself. I never dreamed I’d be home,” said Bonnie. “I used to hear stories of when these towns were alive. So it’s surreal to see people come back, fix their old houses, and decide to stay. They I am full of hope.”
