Few movies are as beautiful as those made about cinema. In fact, as a fan of classic movies in general, these are also my favorites. The film industry around the world loves nostalgia dearly. The new Sam Mendes empire of light, the skilled craftsman brings his love of cinema to the forefront. Mix that with the always-on-point Olivia Colman and the finished product is sure to be good. Here are our thoughts!

empire of light It follows Hilary (Coleman), a woman whose entire life revolves around a declining movie theater where she works as a manager. Her life is a humdrum. Another day another dollar. She instantly hits it off with Steven (Michael Ward), a young man who comes to work in the theater during his gap year. They quickly tumble into a chaotic relationship.

Michael Ward and Olivia Colman look around a deserted restaurant in Empire of Light.

As usual, life gets in the way as racism, xenophobia and mental health issues overshadow their well-being.Director Sam Mendes empire of light from his script.

Olivia Colman as Hilary comes onto the screen in a career-best performance. Her fragile, layered portrayal makes it difficult to argue that she deserves another Oscar nomination. favorite.

of empire of light, Coleman spirals through an intense emotional arc. But through it all, her friendliness and immense likeability are her strengths. With all the emotion, pain and drama, it’s easy to care about this woman. You want her to succeed.

Olivia Colman cries tears of joy in Empire of Light.

The story briefly focuses on the mediocrity of her daily life. We see Hillary as a woman who craves victory. But through all this hardship, she sees the good in people and is there for those around her.

As her growing struggles with her mental health make her behavior more and more erratic, audiences are fixed on the likable and relatable woman they met in the first act. I have no sympathy or fear.instead we feel her.

What perhaps hits hardest in Coleman’s portrayal is her feelings for Hilary’s inner goodness and strength. This becomes even more pronounced in her relationship with Stephen. Both performers deliver tender chemistry, and their bond is at the heart of this story.

Olivia Colman cries as she watches the movie screen in the dark theater of Empire of Light.

empire of light It features a very talented cast. Colman is definitely an MVP and deserves an award, but she’s more than just her. Ward runs alongside her in her award predictions, both delivering beautifully heartfelt performances that take the film to a new level.

At the same time, Toby Jones and Tom Brooke deliver subtle and critical supporting performances. Each will help create a colorful environment in the Empire Theater and foster a sense of camaraderie in this challenging world. There is a sense of back-to-back relationship between the staff.

Unfortunately, the story is a bit muddled under the aspirations of Mendes’ script. and, empire of light I want to focus on racism, economic inequality, sexism, movie nostalgia, Hillary’s mental health struggles… Ultimately, it’s hard to fully justify these important topics.

A dimly lit stage lit by crimson velvet curtains from the movie Empire of Light.

empire of light It stands alone as a love letter to cinema. From story to set design to cinematography, cinematic awe radiates from the screen.

    RELATED: Movie Reviews: Armageddon time

Nowhere is this felt more strongly than deep in the second act, when Hillary actually decides to see the movie. She worked there too long, but she never stayed and saw.

With projectionist Norman (a pitch-perfect Toby Jones), Hillary sits in a celluloid glow.Specifically, the 1979 Peter Sellers classic am thereAt the moment Coleman really shines. In this dilapidated cinema, the glow of the screen alone illuminates her face, and you don’t even need to look at the screen to understand her joy. When Norman dims her lights, empire of light It may end there. This is how we should feel.

Olivia Colman stands outdoors in the sun in the movie Empire of Light.

Anyone who has seen Mendes’ last film 1917, you should know that the director is a master craftsman of cinema. Few filmmakers bring exactly the same flair to the technical side of the art form.the same applies empire of light.

RELATED: Movie Reviews: don’t worry darling

Of course, this is thanks to the talented creative team that has come together every time Mendes has stepped behind the camera. If so, we have neglected our duty.

Despite depicting a rather turbulent period in history, Deakins’ cinematography imbues the film with a dreamy, nostalgic glow. Even when you’re there, there’s something magical about the place.

In Empire of Light, Olivia Colman smiles while eating cotton candy.

of empire of light, director Sam Mendes once again tells us why he’s an award-season fixture. This gentle character his drama combines Mendez’s trademark visual power with a truly underwhelming performance. Nominate Oscar now for Olivia Colman. It’s a shame that an uneven and overly complicated script hampers the film’s true greatness.

empire of light We are currently on the film festival circuit. It hits theaters on December 9, 2022.
