The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a statement regarding concerns that fully cooked ready-to-eat (RTE) pasta sauce labeled as pizza sauce contains the known allergens anchovies and milk. We are issuing a public health alert. Ground beef and sulfites not listed on the product label.
The issue was discovered after the company notified FSIS after receiving a consumer complaint that their pizza sauce had meat in it. The facility determined that employees had labeled a limited number of “Bolognese Pasta Sauce” packages as “Home Style Pizza Sauce.”
FSIS is issuing this public health warning to ensure that consumers are aware they should not consume these products. No recall was requested as the product is no longer available for purchase. However, FSIS is concerned that some products may end up in consumers’ refrigerators.
A fully cooked RTE pasta sauce product labeled Pizza Sauce was manufactured on January 25, 2023.
Products Subject to Public Health Alert:
- 16 oz. A container containing “NEW SEASONS BRIGHT & FLAVORFUL HOMESTYLE PIZZA SAUCE with slow-simmered plum tomatoes” with an expiration date of “3/26/23”.
Products subject to public health alerts do not have USDA facility numbers or inspection marks. These items were shipped to retailers in Oregon and Washington.
As of the posting of this recall, there have been no confirmed reports of side effects from consuming these products.
Consumers who purchase these products are urged not to consume them.These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
