From TikTok to Triller: Analyzing the Viral Video App Trend

In recent years, social media has been taken over by various trends that capture the attention of hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Among these trends is the proliferation of viral video apps like TikTok and Triller. The apps have become increasingly popular, especially among the younger generation, providing a platform for people to share short videos featuring different aspects of their daily lives. In this article, we’ll dive into the trend of viral video apps while examining the differences and similarities between TikTok and Triller.

TikTok, which was launched in China in September 2016 and globally amid 2018-19, has changed the face of social media globally. With over 800 million active users, the app is very popular, especially amongst users between the ages of 16-24. TikTok’s primary objective is to promote creativity and content creation through its short-form videos ranging from 15 to 60 seconds. From dance challenges to lip-syncing, singing to comedy skits, users can create and share various forms of entertaining content. Besides, they can add filters, music, and special effects to their videos to make them stand out.

However, in the US, TikTok was acquired by a US company, ByteDance, due to national security concerns. This resulted in the emergence of alternative video apps such as Triller. Triller, which was launched in 2015, has also become a viral video app sensation that, like TikTok, allows users to create and share 15-second videos with various special effects.

Although both apps share similar features, Triller pushes out more music videos and other professional content. The app has partnered with top music artists, whose songs are featured in many user-generated videos. Triller’s music videos, which can be created by simply selecting a song and recording a video, are a significant factor in its popularity. Additionally, one of Triller’s main selling points is its user-friendliness, with the app’s AI features and user interface making it easy for users to create and share their videos.

One significant difference between TikTok and Triller is the celebrity endorsement. TikTok boasts partnerships with top celebrities who have created videos on the platform, resulting in more brand recognition and user engagement. Triller, on the other hand, recently launched its “TrillerFam Program” which features top content creators as “Triller’s Influencers.”

Another difference is the monetization features. TikTok has an integrated ads platform that allows brands to advertise their products or services seamlessly. Triller alternatively allows users to upload music videos and monetize them via licensing. Furthermore, Triller is launching FastTracks, an initiative designed to help its top users monetize their content in more ways, such as through merchandise and virtual concerts.

In conclusion, the popularity of viral video apps such as TikTok and Triller continues to rise. Although both apps are similar in general features and operations, there are slight differences that differentiate them. While TikTok is more diverse in terms of content creation, Triller’s music videos are a significant factor in its success, generating more celebrity endorsements. Regardless of which app is preferred by users, the trend of viral video apps is here to stay as they continue to shape the way people consume and share content on social media.
