Spanish footballer Gerard Pique announced Thursday that he would be retiring from the sport.
On Instagram, the Barcelona defender shared a home video from his childhood and talked about how he hoped to one day play for the Catalan team.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about her lately,” he said, according to the translated subtitles of his post. “How would little Gerald feel if he were told that all his dreams could come true?”
He continued, “And now that all that child’s dreams have come true, I want to tell you that it’s time to end this journey.
The 35-year-old said his last match is scheduled for Saturday, after which he will become a “regular fan”. However, he ended the video by saying: Sooner or later I will be back.
Piqué also said he wants to pass on his “love for Barça” to his children, the two young sons he shares with pop star Shakira. The couple announced in June that they were splitting up after more than ten years together.
Piqué began his career in the Barcelona team’s youth academy before joining Manchester United and returning to Barcelona in 2008, according to CNN. He became a major star, winning numerous trophies and titles.
