It’s illegal to own a pet owl in the United States for very good reasons. But what if it is allowed? Do owls make good pets?

Owls imprinted on humans behave differently than wild owls. Owls aren’t naturally affectionate towards people, so they don’t make cute, cuddly pets. Instead, they are a lot of work, time, and money.

Human imprinted owls are hard work

Owl keeping is a full-time job. These birds are well groomed and require daily attention, cleaning and feeding. Owls in the wild may be self-sufficient. However, one of these birds needs a lot of human help to live in captivity.

Preparing constant meals with animal carcasses

Your pet owl will rely on you every day to bring you food. And you can’t just go to your local pet store and buy some owl food. All meal preparation must be done by yourself.

Owls are carnivores and need to eat whole animals to stay healthy. The rehabilitation center has freezers filled with mice, rats and rabbits to keep the owls happy. Having a pet owl means having to thaw and slice dead animals every night.

    Owls need daily exercise

Humanoid owls also need to fly regularly. Not getting enough exercise can make you cranky and sick. When an owl gets grumpy, you’ll know right away. They have sharp beaks and claws that they can use without fear.

Coping with messy and disruptive behavior

Even if they aren’t grumpy, owls are destructive birds. Their natural killing instinct drives them to tear up anything you might put in their cage. Stuffed animals, clothing, pillows, and blankets are all fair game in the owl world.

    lots of feathers and poop

When I’m not cleaning up after an owl’s devastating explosion, I’m picking up feathers and poop. lots of poop.

In addition, owls molt thousands of feathers each year. These majestic birds also chop up bones and fur pellets. And did you forget the poop?

Owls empty the end of their intestines once a day with regular smelly droppings. Smelly pudding-like fecal cleaning becomes a part of your daily life!

    very long term commitment

A pet owl is also a long-term commitment. We’re talking decades of dedicated bird care. Owls can live up to 30 years if cared for properly! A large owl, like the great horned owl, in captivity he can live more than 30 years, while smaller owls tend to live about 10 years.

    Breeding season brings noise complaints

Having an owl as a pet also means dealing with noise complaints. There is a lot of fuss when estrus is approaching. If an owl influences you, it expects you to hoot with it on a regular basis. What a fun Saturday night!

Studies show that owls imprinted on humans have the same vocalizations as wild ones. Also, an owl’s natural call is usually very loud. Not only are the mornings tiring, but all-night bastards do not please their neighbors.

    Owls require expensive special care

Another drawback to keeping owls as pets is that they are expensive. These birds require special care that regular veterinarians cannot provide. Also, monitoring an owl’s daily behavior requires considerable knowledge of owl health. There is a lot to learn about owls, but without proper training, your pet can suffer and die.

Final thoughts on whether owls make good pets

Owls do not make good pets. Owning an owl is illegal, and for good reason. These amazing birds belong in the wild. Owls are solitary creatures when in their natural habitat. However, the moment an owl is placed in captivity, its life strategy changes.

Owls imprinted on humans are needy, destructive, messy, and often mean. But it’s not the owl’s fault! These birds are not naturally affectionate towards humans. Only animal professionals with proper licenses and permits should handle owls.
