Sacramento – The new cruise ship American Jazz has just completed its maiden voyage between Sacramento and the Bay Area.
CBS13 came on board to find out why so many people choose to cruise in our backyards.
Passengers aboard the ship, including Randolph and Patty Perkins, were thrilled with their experience.
Operated by American Cruise Lines, the ship offers an eight-day trip between Sacramento and San Francisco, with stops in Stockton, Vallejo, and Napa. It is the first time in decades that a ship of this size has offered such a cruise in the region.
American Cruise Lines’ Kodi Du Preez said the trip went smoothly. “It was actually very smooth sailing. We didn’t have any problems. Everything went really well,” she said.
Captain Andy Howes said the channel was narrow and tight but fun to run.
“Delta here is absolutely fantastic,” he added.
Passengers gather in the main lounge for cocktails, music and trivia nights. You can also check out the National Railway Museum and other attractions in Old Sack.
Ticket prices start at $6,600, but passengers say the accommodations are worth it.
“Everything is included and you are treated like royalty,” said one passenger.
“You can go to a lot of places that big ships can’t go,” added another.
American Cruise Lines has three more trips planned this month, all of which are sold out. The company plans to return again in the fall, and Howes hopes they’ll be here for years to come.
The cruise was originally scheduled to start and end in San Francisco, but has now moved to Sacramento as its homeport in California. Passengers like Dave and Krista Graham, traveling all the way from Kalamazoo, Michigan, are happy they chose to cruise in their own backyard.
“It’s beautiful here,” said Dave Graham. “People here are so welcoming. It’s great,” added Christa Graham.
On Thursdays, passengers can check out the State Railroad Museum and other attractions in Old Sack.
